So dig this--for Mother's Day, I always like to do things that genuinely help my mom out, like cook breakfast, get up and make her coffee, clean house, etc. Well, the fact that I have to work the morning shift tomorrow just shat all over my grand breakfast plans (cuz who wants to get up early on a pampering day?!), so instead of buying just an over-priced Hallmark card I decided to put the little money I still have toward a tube of lavendar & lemongrass shea butter lotion, handmade by Lady Ciran at Southern Enchantments! Before I leave for work in the morning I'm going to leave her a coupon by the coffee pot to be redeemed when I get home mid-afternoon for an "all-you-can-stand" foot rub with the aforementioned lotion. Sounds good, huh? Not to mention my hands will also come away smelling quite delicious :D I damn near ran out of gas coming home from Wicca class in Columbus, but it'll be worth it for mi madre.
There's gonna be some bad storms tonight too, so I hope Mr. Rota TingSup Ercell doesn't think he's coming in for round two ;P
This one goes out to all the moms out there!
Whoo! So since I didn't want to hog up too much of my traveling buddy Kat's computer time, I blogged my whole spring break on paper--old school, yeah?! Without further ado, I present...*cue "Cornets & Flourishes"*
What the Fuck Is That On The Side Of the Road?: Spring Break Edition...
3/7/08: 11:30 PM EST - Flight was delayed by 2 hours! Quite tired...Kat, Cathy, Ken and I ate at Buffalo Wild Wings after they picked us up from the airport. It was great, good food and my first time eating there...but IS DEFINITELY SLEEP TIME NAO.
3/8 - Oh god...today we accompanied Ken to his audio recording class that lasted from noon until five o clock. On a Saturday. It was pretty cool though; the band sounded good but the guitarist and violinist (both male) lacked energy and were kind of bitchy. They had to record one song at least...I lost count of how many times. Yeah. But I noticed that the professor and I both had claddagh rings of similar style...crazy coincidence there. Other than that, we didn't do much--Kat and I frolicked in the snow on campus a little bit before leaving, and we ate at Applebee's earlier tonight.
3/9 - Today was a cool, relaxed day. We woke up around 9, ate cereal, watched "Naruto" that Ken Tivo'd, I geeked out and took pictures of rabbit tracks in Ken's backyard! Kat and I finally found some gloves at Walmart (Target and Meijer's already had spring stuff out), and I actually like them! I'm picky about gloves because I hate the bulk and not being able to grip things. We broke in these gloves by building a snow-woman and snowbunny in Ken's yard before having a brief snowball fight! Then Ken had league bowling...that was interesting, haha. There was talk of going with Ken to class tomorrow, but I don't think that's happening. I'm tired and would like to sleep in, hahaha!
3/10 - Today we drove to Ann Arbor and kicked around downtown a little bit at Encore Records (awesome store with tons of vinyl) and Pinball Pete's (avoid the women's restroom there AT ALL COSTS). I found a store across from Pinball Pete's called Middle Earth, and even though it didn't have the Lord of the Rings stuff that I expected it to (hahaha) it was still a really cool store that was either going out of business or moving elsewhere because they were having a huge clearance sale. I bought a henna kit, a spool of periwinkle blue cord for $1, and a couple of neat beaded necklaces. It was pretty sweet, but my feet are TIRED! Tomorrow we're scheduled for Detroit. Rockin!
3/11 - Today I went ice skating for the first time at Campus Martius Park in Detroit. It was crazy, and I wasn't very good at it, but it was fun! Then we ate at Hard Rock, which was expensive so needless to say we ate cheap and drank water...lol! We also walked through the entire Great Lakes Crossing Mall...HUGE place! Very tiring day. OH WAIT--we sat in on Ken's Japanese class this morning. It was crazy. I didn't know what the hell was going on. Ok, now I'm really going to sleep.
3/12 - Very chill day...just walked around the Twelve Oaks Mall at Novi, took pictures of weird mannequins, and I found a great store called Lush, which sells organic hair and skin care products that are made 100% vegetarian (and ~75% vegan!) in British Columbia! I bought one hunk of soap and the chick threw in several free samples! Sweet! I'm definitely going to check out their website later. I'm kind of glad we're going home tomorrow...I'm starting to feel pangs of homesickness.
3/13: 12:30 AM CDST - Didn't do much today aside from pack, be lazy, and go to the airport. The airport was cooler than Jackson's, no doubt, and I bought a book called Kabul Beauty School to read while we waited. It's actually pretty good, I enjoy it! We had a good flight into Jackson and a safe drive back to Starkville, but I'm bound for Atlanta in the morning. I'm going to sleep once I throw these wet clothes into the dryer.
3/14: 12:30 AM EDST - We're here safe in Atlanta, untouched by neither rain, lightning, nor basketball-loathing tornado. The road trip was fun beyond belief! It was myself, Kristyn, Brian and Lacey in Lacey's car, and despite a little bit of carsickness on Kristyn's part we still managed to hoot and holler and whoop it up all the way down I-20! I was navigator, and Lacey's like a stunt driver from The Fast & The Furious, so it was AWESOME. We kept passing and being passed by some guy driving an SUV with an LSU sticker on the back; he became a source of laughs throughout the entire trip for our carload, being only known as "The LSU Guy"! I got plenty of pictures of various funny road signs and things we saw along the way. Once we got checked into our hotel and all (and snuck the rest of our party into our rooms--more than four people, oh noes!) we goofed around in the Georgia Tech Barnes & Noble, then went to go eat at some brewery called George.....somethingorother. I dunno, but it was good! I had the best Reuben sandwich ever.
We left to go walk back to our hotel, and once we were nearby we started to notice the sky having lots of very bright lightning. No rain though...we ducked into the Barnes & Noble one more time just to look around, but soon after Lacey and I decided to go back to the hotel across the street when it started to sprinkle. We called the rest of them inside and let them know it was raining, then walked across the street and were soon joined by the rest of the gang just as the floodgates opened and poured forth the liquid fury. We hung around in our rooms and watched TV; we didn't know there was a tornado until Lacey's mom called worried because she didn't know if we were in Atlanta for the MSU/Alabama basketball game or the anime convention. We then flipped to the news, heard about the Georgia Dome, were all like "damn", Brian and I went down to the club room to play a few games of pool, and now we're trying to sleep while Will snores like a chainsaw that won't start. Tomorrow's going to be a long day.
3/15: 11:30 CDST - Dear Goddess, if I never see another person dressed as a character from Naruto, I will consider myself blessed beyond all reason. I mean...I was glad to be in a group with my friends and Kristyn dressed in her awesome Zant costume, but...I wasn't in costume...and I was pooped out by the time lunch rolled around. To top it off, we had another tornado come through (again missing us, blessedly), and there was mass confusion for about thirty minutes where no one knew if we could go upstairs or not or why we were going this way or that...it was bad. I wasn't all that concerned, just tired (because Will snored like a freight train all night) with aching feet and ready to go home. I got some really great photographs though of people in pretty costumes around the neat fountain on the GA Tech campus!
Once the costume contest was over, it was a race for Lacey and I to get the fuck out of Atlanta before nightfall. It was like some bad zombie B-movie. But of course, nobody thought to print reverse directions on how to get OUT of Atlanta from the hotel...so we drove around downtown Atlanta's one-way streets for a good twenty or thirty minutes trying to find our way to the blooming interstate. Once Lacey and I finally made it out, it was smooth sailing onto I-20, then boogity all the way to Birmingham. That's when things got interesting.
We had to get back onto Highway 78 somehow. Interesting thing is, there were approximately NINE-THOUSAND exits, all purporting to be Hwy 78. Lies, I say. Since we hopped off of 78 onto I-20 in the middle of Birmingham, I assumed that the exit for Montevallo Rd was the correct exit. I was wrong. We drove through the ghetto hinterlands of Birmingham, AL for a good half-hour before finding a Shell station to get directions...and there, we met a black prophet.
I swear to you, this guy was good. I wasn't even thinking about Tupelo when he looked at us and said, "Yall lookin for 78 to Tupelo?" I was just thinking about Hwy 78. He must have PROBED my mind. Lacey and I boggled later once we were in the car about "wtfhowdidheknow?!" Anyway, we got directions from him that got us back to civilization, but we had to seek clarification on his directions from an old policeman in a McDonald's dining room. Now we're FINALLY on 78 headed toward home, and I couldn't be more relieved. What an adventure! It was very much like O Brother, Where Art Thou?, only without George Clooney :(
3/16 - Home!! I woke up earlier than I would have liked this morning...we didn't get in until 1:30 this morning, later than everyone else because of course we were lost adventuring in Birmingham. I smell some red beans and rice cooking in the kitchen, so I'm gonna go peep that.
And now it's back to the educational grindstone...alas! To leave such fun times for such drudgery.
I'll make a post later tonight with a very big event that happened yesterday...And with that, I consider myself caught up on my blog365 ;)
Some really severe storms are forecast to move on through tonight, I'm excited! Yall know I'm 'bout crazy and love to feel the wind-driven rain sting against my arms and face and fuck my hair up all to hell. The school's already taking precautions; they posted this on their "emergency" section of the website:
1:15pm: Because of the uncertainty of developing severe weather conditions, and out of precaution for safety of students, faculty, staff, and visitors, Mississippi State University is taking a number of precautions Monday evening. The National Weather Service is predicting the possibility of severe thunderstorms, including high straight-line winds, beginning as early as 8 p.m. Those traveling should exercise extreme caution, and seek shelter if conditions worsen. Stay away from windows if indoors and seek shelter in an interior room or hallway. The Meridian campus also is affected. Straight line winds may generate damage similar to tornadoes, including damage from flying debris.
--Starkville and Meridian campus evening classes will meet and then dismiss no later than 8 p.m.
--The Stennis-Montgomery Student Association-sponsored Congressional Debate, scheduled for 7 p.m. in Lee Hall auditorium, is cancelled.
--Custodial Services will begin locking classroom buildings after 8 p.m. and will complete that by 8:45 p.m. All academic and administrative buildings (including Colvard Union, Sanderson Center, Mitchell Memorial Library) should be vacated and locked by 9 p.m.
--All food outlets on campus, with the exception of Hathorn and Ruby Hall convenience stores, will close at 8 p.m.
--There will be updates only if conditions warrant."
Whoo, zydeco music got me jumpin'! Time for class now.
Still battling with myself over the "when it rains, it pours" scenario I described to those privvy few in my neighborhood.
Palmistry is pretty interesting stuff, I've been reading up on it the past few days.
Kat and I's trip to Detroit is a week and two days away. *hyperventilates* It's going to be so...cold...but that gives me an excuse to pack my trenchcoat! Whoohoo!
In other news, I'm too sexy for this blog.

Still feeling poopy, but am on the mend. (yes, I put it in the most layman's terms possible.) I went to Early US History lecture today so I wouldn't fall too far behind in notes...because I don't know much of anyone in that class (that I talk to, anyway). Band and choir rehearsal is still a no, though.
Last night we had some pretty fierce storms move through...lots of tornado-related deaths in the states around us (Tennessee, Arkansas, Alabama), but there didn't seem to be any fatalities in Mississippi, thank the Goddess. Kristyn, Lauryn, Emily and I wiled away the night by having our own little free-style D&D roleplay...it was fun, we're doing it again tonight (with the addition of Jason). I was a human sorceror, of course...we didn't really bother with modifiers...we just rolled our stats and went on, since we weren't following any campaign. Kristyn was our GM, and Lauryn (our elven bard) ended up getting hit on by a French snow leopard in a business suit. I ended up grabbing some enchanted gold, which turned my right hand into a crab's pincer. All I wanted was a tome of ancient necromancy wisdom...called the Motha-Fuckin Necronomicon...yes, we made that part up too.
...
...
I don't know about yall, but I'm of the opinion that Kristyn is the greatest GM ever. LOL!
My tattoo is healing up, and itching like nobody's business.
Why is waiting for this e-mail about my tattoo one of the most nerve-wracking things ever? I want it done just to see what it feels like, and because I think it's a pretty design. As eager as I am, I'm just getting one foot done today so if it hurts like a bitch I can at least still hobble on my right foot.
If I don't get my appointment set up before English Lit at 2 o clock it's going to bug me the entire hour and fifteen minutes we're talking bout the Canterbury Tales--surely I will be driven to madness, lol!
Doesn't look like the weather's going to get too bad today, which saddens me slightly. I enjoy storms (and having classes be suspended [especially English Lit]).
Ugh! I'm trying to distract myself from watching my inbox. How should I distract myself?
Yesterday was a horridly lonesome, grey, droopy dreary day. It got a little better once I got out of the apartment and went to see Meet the Spartans with Jason, which wasn't that funny at all. But companionship was much appreciated, and we went to Applebee's afterward and had good conversation. Plus I got to pretty myself up a little bit, which is a mood-booster in itself--even if it's not for any particular reason. Probably just because I'm feeling that loneliness that comes from not having the companionship that a certain male brings. Long-time readers of this blog know. Starts with a 'j' and vaguely rhymes with "el jefe".
Anyway, I'm itching to get my hair cut back way, way short again like it was at the start of band camp:
That was from last night. My eyes looked vunderbar :)
Dunno why I insisted on making a funny face--oh wait, cuz I felt like it. Duh!
Tuesday's forecast is strong thunderstorms; I'm looking forward to this so perhaps I can get another bad-ass picture of an enshrouded funnel cloud:
SWEET. Kristyn is positive I'm going to get myself killed. I concur, somewhat.
I'm almost a third of the way through Fevre Dream, still lovin' it. Is it obvious that the whole bloody Mississippi River is flowing through my veins?! Haha, I'm so poetic and idiotic it's almost dichotomous. Truth is, I'm just babbling to try to find something to keep my chin up about. I'll be glad to be back in choir on Monday--Dr. Lesley (when he's not having a bad day) just makes me laugh.
Tuesday I'll be seeing about getting my tattoo done in West Point in the evening after choir...dunno how busy Coon usually is on Tuesday nights, but we'll see. Time for the adrenaline junkie to get a fix, hahaha.
This probably won't make national news stations, but today in Starkville the weather has been going ape-shit. When I woke up around 11:40 this morning (my first class isn't until 2 o clock), I'm greeted by several urgent-sounding e-mails. Two are from the Maroon Alert system, informing peoples that severe weather is expected to move through the area soon, and classes from noon until 3:30 are suspended. The third is from Dr. Lesley, urging all of his students to heed the warnings and not do anything stupid.
SWEET. I immediately make plans to do something that others would deem stupid.
I text Lacey and Kristyn to ensure that they're alive and well and receive confirmation of such. The tornado sirens go off, and I get word of a tornado reported heading toward Starkville. I then grab my cell phone, camera, car keys, and they all wish my stupid ass well as I run out to drive down the two highways surrounding Starkville to see what I can see see see.
Driving around, I spot a whole lot of rain and nothing else, aside from one dark cell to the southwest that looks like the culprit for the sirens and the warning. This cell is also hovering southwest of OUR APARTMENT. I haul ass back up the highway, pull into the gas station down the street from our apartment complex and join a local cop in the rain to photograph the cloud in question, and the behavior of the surrounding clouds:
These clouds were being drawn to the southwest, only adding to the certainty of what was about to go down. I jump back in my car, drive to the apartment, tell them what's going on, and tell them I'm going back out again. At this point I think I should mention that when I left a second time, I forgot to put my shoes back on. So there I was, traipsing around barefooted, snapping pictures.
At this point the rain has stopped, the wind has picked up (blowing westerly), and the sirens have kicked up again. I join the people from the office outside by the clubhouse, as we watch a plane (with it's headlight on!) fly over us...toward the storm. That would be a problem...not three minutes later, the same damn plane flies back in the opposite direction! Duh, Mister Pilot.
The wind does a final gusty number, and the tornado moves past behind the apartment complex to the north/northeast! The funnel was obscured by rain, but it was unmistakable in that it was moving quite fast and...was hidden by rain, as tornadoes tend to be. I managed to get a picture of the leading wall-cloud before it disappeared from my line of sight.
At this point Emily, who is still back at the (second-story) apartment, calls me, asks me where I am, and my only response is "I'm safe but yall get down NOW!" In hindsight, this probably didn't help people's nerves one bit, but it was the only way to articulate my ninety-mile-a-minute thoughts.
I'm not sure if yall know, but what generally follows a tornadic cell? That's right, rain. Lots of rain. This thought occurred to me as I got off the phone with Emily, so I started to run. But I wasn't fast enough, and was soaked to the skin in about .2 seconds. FYI, it's hard to run in a skirt that's sopping wet and sticking to your ankles. I arrive back at the apartment to find the roomies underneath the staircase. Kristyn would make light of this later by joking, "Yeah, in case of emergency: Lacey grabs the real dog, I grab a stuffed animal, Emily panics, and Kat breaks every rule in existence." But I got a kick-ass picture from the deal while remaining unhurt, so I think I win.
I was texting a friend who was in the lockdown on campus, and as far as we know nothing very damaging happened. I'll be leaving for choir soon, so I'll be sure to take my camera and my tale with me.
We've been expecting snow flurries/sleet since Saturday. The weathermen keep pumping up the hopes and dreams of the masses, but I think we all know better by now. Just more freezing ass weather with no cavorting to be found. Alas! (Justin gives me a little bit of hell for using that word so much in my every day life. I fear it's becoming a habit, haha.)
I'll probably make a green bean casserole for Saturday's Yule feast. Anyone have any particularly delicious recipes I should try?
Oh, and the library browser finally decided to let me access Vox. Huzzah huzzah!
I'm off to go wander around the rare books section.
Went and saw Beowulf this afternoon with Lacey; it was a pretty kick-ass movie. Didn't follow the story at all, but was kick-ass nevertheless.
Tomorrow I ride an hour up the road with Doc Lesley to go sing "Messiah" at FUMC! Bad news: It's going to be cold and rainy the entire time. :(
